It seems like an eternity since I first registered boodebr.org, so I finally broke down and decided to put some content up. I've been keeping a blog at blogger.com for a while, but have started to feel stifled by it. Don't get me wrong, blogger is a great service, especially for free, but I wanted more control over the site (to be able do to backups, more customization, etc.). And, since I've been paying for a fully capable LAMP host anyways, I decided it might be a good idea to take advantage of it ...
After some research, I've decided to go with Wordpress for the main page and blog. Drupal appealed to me for the large number of modules it has, and for being more of an overall site management package rather that just a blog. However, it sounded like it had some usability issues and a steep learning curve, so I'm taking the easier route. I'm going to use Wordpress for the main site, and will add on various (non-Wordpress) PHP modules to do what I want, instead of having an all-in-one package. We'll see how it goes.
Incidentally, I'm really a Python person, so would rather have used a Python-based package, but that's not an option on my current webhost. I looked seriously at some Python-friendly hosts like this, but decided to stick with my current host for now at least (known track record).
I imagine I will make a number of posts about trying to get everything running, so I will stick them in the category "metablog".
For now, I've left WordPress in the default configuration for user comments. I never allowed comments on my other blog, so this will be a new experience. If the comment spam it too bad, I may have to turn them off.
